Habits of Successful Leaders – Are You One of Them?

“Great leaders don’t tell you what to do, they show you how it’s done.” – Anonymous.

For some people, leadership means power. It means being on top of the success ladder and setting an example by encouraging others to push past their limits to achieve a target. And for others, it means responsibility and being a guiding light to those under their wing. While a lot of people are capable of becoming people of authority, not everyone has what it takes to become an exceptional leader. Every entrepreneur likes to believe that they are an exception, just like every parent likes to believe their kids are incapable of doing wrong. And while we don’t engage (sometimes) in shenanigans, we like to believe that we have what it takes to become the superhero our team needs. But the question to ask yourself is, are you REALLY doing your part in encouraging employees, and helping them grow? Do you have what it takes to be a successful leader? Here area few habits of successful leaders. Do you have what it takes?

Respond Rather Than React

You’re probably wondering something along the lines of, “What are you talking about, Jon? I’m very responsive!” In reality, we often don’t realize how we act (or react, in this case.) Do your employees avoid talking to you about an issue they’re having trouble with? Do they go out of their way to avoid talking about problems with you? Do you often hear from your subordinates about your team having an issue they’re afraid to approach you with? It’s probably because you react and not respond. Remember that knee-jerk reactions don’t help you find solutions. Communication is the key to helping find the answers. If you don’t communicate, your employees won’t listen.

Finding Solutions, Not Someone to Blame

Exceptional leaders know that finding someone to blame is not the answer to the solution. Instead, they utilize their energy to find solutions to the problem. Discuss matters with your team and take into account all they have to say. Open communication will help solve the problem faster.

Focusing on Strengths

It’s important to take into account your team’s weaknesses but it’s better to focus on each member’s strength. Remember that each individual is unique and by combining their strengths together, you can help your team strive to do better, work harder, and improve their performance.
